Abstract: The phenomenon of academic failure is considered one of the heaviest burdens on the educational system, parents, and students alike, and it has psychological and social repercussions on both the student and society. There are factors related to the student themselves, as well as factors linked to the family environment and the school setting and its stakeholders. This research paper will analyze some determinants of academic failure through a sociological approach to the phenomenon, focusing on two main dimensions: personal determinants related to the student, and school-related determinants associated with the educational institution. These factors may contribute to disruptions in the student’s academic trajectory, noting that teacher characteristics, the curriculum, and the school climate act as mediating variables influencing academic failure.
