Résumé

Abstract: This research investigates the linguistic and historical complexities surrounding the etymology of the term "Bagne," traditionally associated with the prisons of Christian captives in Algiers and Constantinople during the Ottoman era. The core issue lies in the inaccuracy of the conventional etymological derivation that links the word exclusively to "baths" (Bagnes/Bagni). The study adopts a comparative historico-linguistic approach, involving a comprehensive survey of early European dictionaries (such as Furetière and Trévoux) and an analysis of the memoirs of travelers and captives (including Cervantes, Haedo, Dan, and d'Aranda). Furthermore, it examines diplomatic treaties and historical maps while critically discussing the hypotheses of prominent linguists and Orientalists (such as Lammens and Bihan). The research deconstructs the widespread explanation that the name originated from the presence of baths within the prison of Constantinople, classifying it as a "cliché" that lacks contemporary historical evidence. The study confirms that the term began to gain prevalence toward the end of the 16th century through Italian and Spanish linguistic channels. Linguistic Hypotheses: The research favors either the hypothesis of an Arabic origin (derived from bināya or bunyān—meaning "building" or "structure"), which was phonetically transcribed by captives, or the hypothesis of "metaphorical punning," which compared the humidity of underground prisons (matamores) to that of public baths. Conclusion: The study concludes with a framework of "systematic skepticism," emphasizing that this etymological puzzle requires further excavation within the deep archives of the Mediterranean basin.
