Abstract This study examines the evolution of religious trends in the Islamic Maghreb during the 6th to 8th centuries AH, relying on coinage as a material source reflecting the religious, political, and intellectual conditions of the time. The focus is on the Almohad state, which represented the culmination of a unified Moroccan identity. The research shows that the Maliki school dominated religious life until the rise of the Almohads, who adopted a new doctrine founded by Ibn Tūmart, combining Ashʿarite theology with elements of Shiʿism and Kharijism. He called for “pure monotheism” and the “infallibility of the Mahdi,” ideas that appeared on coins with distinctive slogans. The Almohads also used square-shaped coins to express their independence. Later, Caliph Idris al-Ma’mun abolished the notion of infallibility, initiating gradual religious reform. The Hafsid, Marinid, and Zayyanid states inherited this legacy, with the study focusing specifically on the Hafsid state.
