Abstract This research aims to study a precise fundamentalist issue concerning the indication of commanding an attribute upon the qualified object, analyzing the point of contention, and clarifying the difference between this issue and the rule "whatever is necessary for the fulfillment of an obligation is itself obligatory." The significance of this research lies in the fact that this issue has not received sufficient independent study, despite its significant impact on jurisprudential disagreement, particularly regarding the ruling on sniffing water into the nostrils (istinshāq) during ablution and ritual bath. The research problem addresses how this issue emerged and evolved, the ruling on commanding an attribute in cases of obligation and recommendation, the positions of different fundamentalist schools on it, and why some fundamentalists omitted it from their works. The research employed the inductive method by tracing the statements of fundamentalists, the analytical method to discuss evidence, the historical method to trace the emergence and development of the issue, and the deductive method to extract its jurisprudential applications. The research reached several findings, most notably: the first scholar to discuss this issue was al-Bāqillānī, and fundamentalists divided into two opinions: one holding that commanding an attribute as a recommendation does not imply the obligation of the qualified object (Shāfiʿīs), and another holding that it does imply such obligation (Hanafīs and Hanbalīs). It also became clear that the reason some fundamentalists omitted this issue is due to its overlap with the rule "whatever is necessary for the fulfillment of an obligation is itself obligatory." The research recommends conducting similar independent studies on precise fundamentalist issues that have not received sufficient attention, linking them to their jurisprudential applications.
