There is no disagreement that publishing a manuscript under its correct title is one of the foremost priorities of the process of textual editing (taḥqīq)—a process that essentially aims to present the text of a work in the form intended by its author, or as close to it as possible. However, since deficiency and error are inherent in human endeavor and cannot be entirely avoided, while perfection and accuracy remain its ultimate goals and the highest aspiration of those engaged in it, another process has emerged to accompany and support textual editing. Its supreme objective is the preservation of heritage from distortion and misrepresentation. This process is what we call the critical review of edited and published heritage texts. The present article falls within this framework, as it examines an important manuscript on genealogy by the Constantine scholar of his time, Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Rāshidī (d. 1194 AH). This manuscript—published for the first time—addresses numerous lineages of Algerian families and tribes, clarifying which among them are of الشريف (sharīfian), Arab, or Berber origin. Although this manuscript remained known and circulated until relatively recent times, and was utilized by his students and later authors in the field of genealogy, its author, Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Rāshidī, did not assign it a specific title. Nor was it known by a fixed designation within scholarly circles; rather, it circulated under descriptive titles derived from its content. Such was its state in the manuscript tradition until it entered the world of print, where it appeared under the unusual title: “ʿIqd al-Laʾālī al-Mustaḍīʾa li-Nafī Ẓalām al-Talbīs” (“The Necklace of Radiant Pearls for the Removal of the Darkness of Confusion”). This article therefore seeks to demonstrate the error in assigning this title and to uncover the circumstances through which it came to be attributed to the manuscript.
