Résumé

Urban settlement in the Sahara is as old as the societies that first inhabited this environment. One of the most distinctive features of Saharan urbanism is the ksar (pl. ksour). The architectural heritage of local Saharan ksour, in its design and spatial organization, is shaped by the worldview of their inhabitants, by their living, social, and economic conditions, and by the nature of the primary building materials used in construction, on the one hand, and by the state of political and security instability that historically marked Saharan life, on the other. This applies in particular to the historic ksour of the Mzab Valley in Ghardaia, one of Algeria’s Saharan cities rich in architectural and archaeological heritage. The valley includes the ksour of Ghardaia, Bounoura, Beni Isguen, Tajninat (present-day El Atteuf), and Melika, to which are added the ksour of Berriane and El Guerrara. UNESCO has inscribed the five ksour of the Mzab Valley plain on the World Heritage List.
