Résumé

The role of the first language (L1) in the teaching of a second or foreign language (L2) has been a contentious issue in the field of applied linguistics. For decades, the monolingual principle, which advocates for the exclusive use of the target language in the classroom, held significant sway. However, recent sociocultural and cognitive perspectives have prompted a re-evaluation of this principle, arguing for a more judicious and strategic use of the L1. This paper explores the attitudes of Algerian EFL teachers towards the use of Arabic (and to a lesser extent, French) in their English language classrooms. Through a qualitative case study approach utilizing semi-structured interviews with five practicing teachers, this research investigates the perceived functions, benefits, and drawbacks of L1 use. The findings indicate that while teachers are cognizant of the importance of maximizing L2 exposure, they overwhelmingly hold positive attitudes towards the strategic use of L1. Key functions identified include explaining complex grammar, conveying vocabulary meaning, managing the classroom, and building rapport with students. The study concludes that a principled, balanced approach to L1 use, aligned with the learners' needs and the specific pedagogical context, is not only practical but also beneficial in the Algerian EFL setting.
