Résumé

This study aimed to examine the effect of neighborhood sports participation on emotional catharsis and depression levels among young people (18–25 years) in the city of Biskra. A comparative descriptive design was employed, and a sample of 180 participants was selected using a two-stage cluster sampling method. Participants were divided into three groups according to their physical activity levels: high, moderate, and low. Data were collected using the Weekly Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAC), the Emotional Catharsis Scale (ECS), and the Beck Depression Inventory–Short Form (BDI-SF). One-way ANOVA and Cohen’s d effect size analyses revealed statistically significant differences between groups, with the high-activity group showing the highest levels of emotional catharsis and the lowest levels of depression. Pearson correlation analysis further indicated a moderate negative association between physical activity and depression (r = −0.34) and a small-to-moderate positive association with emotional catharsis (r = +0.29). These findings highlight the positive role of neighborhood sports in promoting mental health and emotional well-being among youth
