Résumé

This study explores the evolution of Saudi–U.S. relations from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s, focusing on the influence of the Arab–Israeli conflict and the strategic importance of oil. It begins with Saudi Arabia’s opposition to the 1938 U.S. support for Palestine’s partition and examines the 1945 meeting between King Abdulaziz and President Roosevelt as a turning point in bilateral ties. Although the discovery of oil in 1938 initiated a strong economic partnership, American support for Israel—especially following the 1947 UN partition plan and the 1948 establishment of Israel—fueled Saudi concerns. Tensions escalated during the 1967 and 1973 Arab–Israeli wars, when Saudi Arabia used oil as a political tool, leading to the 1973 oil embargo that severely affected the U.S. economy. The study further examines Saudi reactions to statements by Defense Secretary James Schlesinger suggesting possible military action in response to future oil boycotts, which increased mistrust and pushed Saudi Arabia to demand security guarantees. Ultimately, the study underscores Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a key player in global energy markets, capable of influencing regional and international political outcomes, particularly regarding the Arab–Israeli conflict.
