Résumé

Abstract The present paper considers how two major U.S. digital newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, represent African Americans and whether their coverage corresponds to the nation’s evolving racial composition. While journalism professes a commitment to portraying the full range of American life, depictions of marginalized communities remain narrowly drawn. Through qualitative content analysis, the project analyzes a corpus of digital articles featuring African Americans, with particular attention to recurring themes: poverty, criminalization, athleticism, and beauty standards modeled on whiteness. The findings are specific. Poverty emerges as the most visible theme in coverage of Black Americans. Representations of African American women are treated both within the context of Black communities and in relation to dominant cultural narratives. Although both newspapers tend to associate Black identity with economic hardship, they differ in the volume of coverage devoted to African American subjects and in their portrayals of Black women. The New York Times and The Washington Post exhibit distinct editorial patterns, made legible through comparative reading. The inquiry joins ongoing scholarly efforts to understand how media shape public understanding of race in the United States and calls for representations that acknowledge the lived realities of African Americans without reducing them to familiar conventions.
