In this article, we deal with the temporal system that operates within the negative constructions (NEG-constructions) in Standard Arabic (SA). In this language, it exists negative markers (NEG-markers) which are specified for time (NEG [+T]), and others which are (NEG [-T]). The crucial question is to show how the temporal feature is checked in both cases. In doing so, we establish a flexible model, where three functional levels are involved in creating a temporal information (CST, NEG[+T], and T). In order to deal with the temporal structure in SA, we postulate a structure with CST (Speech time) and extended nodes, libelled TREF and TASP. TREF denotes a referential tense and TASP denotes Asp [+anaphoric].
NEG, modal, V-movement overt/covert, tense, aspect.
